Car sales follow up texts when there is no reply: 13 templates

The lead was warm, the questions were good, and then the chat went silent. Most car shoppers do not ignore you on purpose. They got busy, lost the thread or are shopping somewhere else. These 13 messages nudge without nagging: the day two check, a new photo, a call offer, a question about what is holding them back, a lighthearted check that you have the right number, and a last text that leaves things friendly and honors an opt out. They are for people who gave you their number and agreed to hear from you. Copy any message, or add all 13 to your keyboard and send them in one tap. It works in any app, including iMessage, WhatsApp, Messenger and SMS.

Works in WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, Messenger and every other app.

Words in {{double braces}} are blanks. In the textcuts keyboard you fill them with one tap, and the names you used recently come back.

First nudge

Day two nudge

Essential
Hi {{name}}, I wrote on Monday about the car and I'm not sure my message arrived. Still interested? Even a quick yes or no helps.

When to send: Two days after a message that got no reply.

Why it works: Blaming the delivery, not the person, keeps it light.

Shorter version

Hello {{name}}, maybe my first message was too long. Short version: is the car still on your list?

When to send: The day after the nudge.

Why it works: One question, five seconds to answer.

A fresh photo

EssentialPro
{{name}}, here's a fresh photo of the car you asked about, in case it helps: {{link}}. Tell me what you think.

When to send: Three or four days in.

Why it works: A new thing to look at is a better reason to write than a reminder.

A small update

Pro
A small update on the car you liked, {{name}}: we've added {{item}}. Thought you'd want to know.

When to send: When something real changes.

Why it works: News is a valid reason to message.

Second try

Offering a call

Essential
{{name}}, sometimes a text isn't the easiest way. Want me to call you instead? Give me a time that suits you.

When to send: A week in.

Why it works: A change of channel can restart a conversation.

Wrong number check

Is this the right number, {{name}}? If not, no worries, tell me and I'll remove it. If it is, I'm happy to help whenever you're ready.

When to send: When there has been no reply at all.

Why it works: A light touch and a clear exit.

What holds you back

{{name}}, one honest question: what's holding you back? Price, timing, the car itself? I can sort out some of those.

When to send: After two nudges.

Why it works: A direct question gets the real answer.

Missed each other

Hi {{name}}, we missed each other today. No problem. Tell me a better time and I'll be there.

When to send: After a missed call or visit.

Why it works: It assumes goodwill.

Closing

Last text

Essential
Last message from me, {{name}}, I promise. If you ever want to talk cars, text this number. Take care.

When to send: A week after the last nudge.

Why it works: A friendly end invites a reply.

Opt out reminder

Essential
Hi {{name}}, if you'd rather I stop texting, say so and I will. If you're still looking, I'm glad to keep helping.

When to send: With any of the later texts.

Why it works: Respecting the choice builds trust.

A month later

Essential
Hello {{name}}, it's been a month. Any change of plans? If you want a car now or later, I'll be here.

When to send: Four weeks after the last message.

Why it works: Gentle and without pressure.

Weekend note

Hope you have a good weekend, {{name}}. When you're back to car shopping, you know where to find me.

When to send: A Friday after the last message.

Why it works: No ask at all, which is why it is read.

They found a car

Thanks for letting me know, {{name}}. I'm glad you found one. If anything about the deal needs a second opinion, I'm here.

When to send: When they say they bought elsewhere.

Why it works: A kind goodbye often becomes the next referral.

Do not say

  • Texting a number that never agreed to hear from you, or one from a bought list.

Instead: Text only people who gave you their number and agreed to hear from you. Type each message yourself, and stop the moment they ask. In the US, texting rules (TCPA) require consent.

  • Fake urgency ("only one left", "offer ends tonight") to get a reply.

Instead: Share real news such as a new photo or a real change in the car.

  • Texting a number that never agreed to hear from you.

Instead: Send texts only to people who gave you their number and asked to be contacted, and stop at once if they ask.

  • Guilt ("I thought you were serious").

Instead: Ask what is holding them back, and accept the answer.

  • "Guaranteed financing", "everyone approved" or "no credit needed".

Instead: Say you will review their options together and that approval depends on the lender.

  • Copy pasted pitches that open with "Hey buddy" or ignore what the person told you.

Instead: Start with their name and one detail from your conversation.

  • Fake urgency ("only one left", "another buyer is coming") when it is not true.

Instead: Say what is true: where the car is and what is ready.

  • A price or monthly payment you cannot honor.

Instead: Send the full written figure, with taxes and fees, or invite them in.

Frequently asked questions

How many follow ups before I stop?

Three to four messages over about two weeks, then a last message. After that, one message a month later at most.

What if they never reply and I still want to reach them?

Try a call, a photo or a real update. If nothing works, stop, and honor any request to stop immediately.

Do these work on the free plan?

Yes, 11 of the 13 use one blank and work fully on the free plan, which allows 8 textcuts, 1 folder and 1 blank per textcut. The other 2 use two blanks, so filling both from the keyboard needs Pro. You can always copy any message and type the second detail by hand.

Is it okay to text customers, and what about opt out?

Text people who gave you their number and agreed to be contacted, one message at a time. Tell new contacts how to stop, for example "tell me if you'd rather not get texts", and honor any stop request right away. Never text bought lists.

Does it work in WhatsApp, iMessage and other apps?

Yes. The textcuts keyboard works in any app where you type: iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, SMS and email.
