Follow up texts for showroom visitors who did not buy: 13 templates

Someone walked the lot, sat in two cars, and left saying they would think about it. Most of those shoppers buy a car within weeks, and many buy from whoever stayed friendly and useful. These 13 messages keep you in the conversation without pushing: a thank you, what they were looking for, news when the right car arrives, a check in a week later, and a soft last text that leaves the door open. Copy any message, or add all 13 to your keyboard and send them in one tap. It works in any app, including iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram and SMS.

Works in WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, Messenger and every other app.

Words in {{double braces}} are blanks. In the textcuts keyboard you fill them with one tap, and the names you used recently come back.

Right after the visit

Thanks for stopping by

Essential
Hi {{name}}, thank you for stopping by today, even though you came in just to look. Looking is how people end up with the right car. Come back whenever you like.

When to send: The same day they visited.

Why it works: It makes the visit feel welcome, not like a failed sale.

What they were looking for

Essential
{{name}}, you mentioned you wanted something with a big trunk and good visibility. I'll keep an eye out and text you when one arrives.

When to send: The same evening.

Why it works: Repeating their words proves you listened and promises a reason to write again.

Price on the one they liked

EssentialPro
Hi {{name}}, you asked about the price on the {{product}}. I'd rather give you the full written breakdown than a rough number. Can I send it here, or would you prefer email?

When to send: When they asked about price and left without it.

Why it works: It offers the real figure and lets them pick the channel.

While they decide

A matching car arrived

Good news {{name}}, a car like the one you described just came in. Want me to send photos before it goes on our website?

When to send: When a fitting car lands.

Why it works: It gives a real reason to write, which nobody minds receiving.

Monthly cost on their mind

Hello {{name}}, if the monthly cost was on your mind, there is no commitment in talking it through. I can show you a few ways to set it up, and you decide.

When to send: When they hesitated over affordability.

Why it works: It lowers the stakes and keeps the decision with them.

Waiting on something

Take your time, {{name}}. If you're waiting on your bank, a tax refund or a decision at home, that's normal. I'll check back in a week unless you tell me otherwise.

When to send: When they say they are waiting for something.

Why it works: It sets a clear, small follow up they have agreed to.

One week later

Essential
Hi {{name}}, it's been a week since your visit. Still thinking about a car, or did you find one? Either answer helps me.

When to send: Seven days after the visit.

Why it works: The two easy answers make a reply almost effortless.

What changed

{{name}}, did your plans change since we met? Different budget, different size, different timing? Tell me and I'll adjust what I look for.

When to send: When they go quiet after your first follow up.

Why it works: It asks about their situation, not about their decision.

Invite them back

We have a quieter day on {{day}} if you'd like to come back and look without any rush. I'll have the keys ready and a coffee on the table.

When to send: When they want more time with the car.

Why it works: A quiet day is a real reason and a pleasant picture.

A better fit

{{name}}, thinking about your list, there's another model that may suit you better than the first one. Want a quick side by side of the two?

When to send: When you spot a closer match.

Why it works: It shows you are solving their problem, not moving inventory.

Later

Soft last text

Essential
Hi {{name}}, I'll stop texting after this one so I don't crowd your phone. If you start shopping again, you have my number. Good luck with the search either way.

When to send: About two weeks after the last reply.

Why it works: Giving them an exit is what makes them reply later.

Months later

Hello {{name}}, it's been a while since you visited. If you're still thinking about a car, I'd be glad to catch up on what you need now. No pressure at all.

When to send: Two to three months later.

Why it works: A relaxed reopening feels like service, not like a campaign.

If a friend is looking

Essential
Thanks again for coming by, {{name}}. If someone you know is shopping for a car, I'd be glad to look after them the same way. Just pass on my name.

When to send: Whenever you finish the thread kindly.

Why it works: It asks for an introduction without asking for anything from them now.

Do not say

  • Texting a number that never agreed to hear from you, or one from a bought list.

Instead: Text only people who gave you their number and agreed to hear from you. Type each message yourself, and stop the moment they ask. In the US, texting rules (TCPA) require consent.

  • "This price is only good today" or "Another buyer is looking at it" when it is not true.

Instead: Give the real dates and the real status of the car, and nothing more.

  • A text that pushes a payment number you cannot honor.

Instead: Offer to write down the full figures with taxes and fees.

  • "Guaranteed financing", "everyone approved" or "no credit needed".

Instead: Say you will review their options together and that approval depends on the lender.

  • Copy pasted pitches that open with "Hey buddy" or ignore what the person told you.

Instead: Start with their name and one detail from your conversation.

  • Fake urgency ("only one left", "another buyer is coming") when it is not true.

Instead: Say what is true: where the car is and what is ready.

  • A price or monthly payment you cannot honor.

Instead: Send the full written figure, with taxes and fees, or invite them in.

Frequently asked questions

How many times should I follow up with someone who did not buy?

Three or four messages over two weeks, spaced out, with a clear last one. After that, one friendly message months later at most.

What do I write when I have no news?

Ask about their situation instead of repeating your offer. The one week and what changed templates do that.

Do these work on the free plan?

Yes, 12 of the 13 use one blank and work fully on the free plan, which allows 8 textcuts, 1 folder and 1 blank per textcut. The other 1 use two blanks, so filling both from the keyboard needs Pro. You can always copy any message and type the second detail by hand.

Is it okay to text customers, and what about opt out?

Text people who gave you their number and agreed to be contacted, one message at a time. Tell new contacts how to stop, for example "tell me if you'd rather not get texts", and honor any stop request right away. Never text bought lists.

Does it work in WhatsApp, iMessage and other apps?

Yes. The textcuts keyboard works in any app where you type: iMessage, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, SMS and email.
