Insurance referral request texts: 14 templates that ask kindly

Your best new clients come from the people who already trust you. The hard part is asking without sounding like you want something. These fourteen texts ask for a referral or a review at moments when a client is happy: after a smooth claim, a renewal, a helpful answer. They ask once, they make saying no easy, and they offer a thank you note instead of a reward, because rules on rewards for referrals vary by state. Send them to clients who agreed to texts. Copy any message, or add all fourteen to your keyboard and send them from iMessage, WhatsApp, SMS or any other app in one tap. textcuts works in any app where you type.

Works in WhatsApp, iMessage, Instagram, Messenger and every other app.

Words in {{double braces}} are blanks. In the textcuts keyboard you fill them with one tap, and the names you used recently come back.

Asking for an introduction

After a good moment

Essential
I'm glad that worked out, {{name}}. If you know someone who could use the same help with their cover, I'd be happy to talk to them. No pressure at all.

When to send: Right after you solved something for a client.

Why it works: The ask follows the good feeling and stays small.

Soft ask at renewal

Essential
Thank you for renewing, {{name}}. If a friend or family member ever asks you about insurance, feel free to pass on my number. I'll look after them the way I look after you.

When to send: After a renewal is done.

Why it works: It promises a standard, not a favor.

Specific person

You mentioned your brother is buying a home, {{name}}. If he'd like help with his cover, feel free to pass him my number, or ask him if he's happy for me to call.

When to send: When a client mentions someone who needs cover.

Why it works: It lets the client pick how to introduce you.

Ready to forward

If it helps, {{name}}, here is a short note you can forward: "My insurance agent has been great. My number is below." Only send it if you mean it.

When to send: When a client offers to recommend you.

Why it works: It makes passing you on a one tap job.

Business owner

Many of my clients run small shops, {{name}}. If another owner you know is thinking about cover, I'd be glad to meet them. A quick call is all it takes.

When to send: For a client who owns a business.

Why it works: It names who you help best.

Reviews and thanks

Asking for a review

EssentialPro
Would you be willing to leave a short review of our work together, {{name}}? Here is the link: {{link}}. Honest words only, good or not so good.

When to send: After a claim or a long relationship.

Why it works: Asking for honest words makes the review worth more.

Review thank you

I just read your review, {{name}}. Thank you. Comments like yours remind me why I enjoy this work.

When to send: After a review is posted.

Why it works: A warm reply makes people want to help again.

Thank you for the introduction

Essential
Thank you for sending your friend my way, {{name}}. I'll take good care of them. Your trust means a lot to me.

When to send: As soon as a referral reaches you.

Why it works: Thanks come first, and fast.

Thank you note, not a gift

Essential
I wanted to say thank you for the introduction, {{name}}. A handwritten note is in the mail to you this week. That's all, just a thank you.

When to send: After a referral becomes a client.

Why it works: A note is a thank you, not an inducement.

Update on the referral

Your friend and I spoke today, {{name}}, and I'm working on their cover. I won't share the details, but I wanted you to know they are in good hands.

When to send: When a referred person starts working with you.

Why it works: It closes the loop without breaking their privacy.

When they say no or nothing

No problem

Of course, {{name}}, no problem at all. If it ever feels right, my door is open. Meanwhile I'm here for your own cover whenever you need me.

When to send: When a client says they would rather not.

Why it works: A gracious reply leaves the relationship better than before.

One gentle reminder

Hello {{name}}, I'm following up once on my earlier note. If nobody comes to mind, that's fine. I'll leave it there.

When to send: Three weeks after an ask with no reply.

Why it works: One reminder, then it ends.

Quarterly hello

It's been a few months, {{name}}, so I wanted to say hi. I'm taking on a few new clients this season. If someone you know is looking, they can text me directly.

When to send: Every few months for happy clients.

Why it works: Honest capacity news, not a pitch.

Year end thanks

Essential
As the year ends, {{name}}, I want to thank you for your trust. I wish you and yours a calm and healthy new year. I'm here whenever you need me.

  • Texting a number that never agreed to hear from you (a bought list, a number copied from a form for something else, a stranger).

Instead: Text only people who gave you their number and agreed to texts. Honor stop right away.

Frequently asked questions

Can I give a client a gift for a referral?

Be careful. Many states restrict gifts and rewards linked to insurance sales, and rules differ for life, health and property. Send a written thank you instead, and ask your compliance contact before offering anything of value.

Can I text a client who never agreed to be texted?

No. Send these only to people who gave you their number and agreed to hear from you by text. The FCC's guide and 47 CFR 64.1200 explain the consent rules. Start a first message with a line such as "Tell me if you'd rather not get texts," and stop the moment someone says stop. Keep texting for people you already work with, one message at a time, typed by you.

Do these templates work on the free plan?

Yes. Thirteen of the fourteen use a single blank, which fills in on the free plan. The "Asking for a review" uses two blanks and needs Pro to fill both from the keyboard.

Can I send these in WhatsApp, iMessage and SMS?

Yes. textcuts is a keyboard, so the templates work in every app where you type, including iMessage, WhatsApp, SMS and Messenger.
